JET Programme

From IkataWiki

The JET Programme is a program initiated by the Japanese government in the 1980s. Its goal is to improve the level of English education and encourage grass-roots internationalization in Japan.

Participants on the JET Programme are often called "JETs."

There are three main types of JETs:

Assistant Language Teacher (ALT)
ALTs are usually based at junior high schools. They assist Japanese teachers of English in teaching their classes.
Coordinator for International Relations (CIR)
CIRs are usually based at municipal governments or international exchange organizations. What they do day-to-day varies widely from place to place. In Ikata, the CIR's main duty is to help run and organize the Exchange Program with Red Wing.
Sports Education Advisor (SEA)
SEAs are like ALTs but teach sports instead of English.

Ikata has 4 JETs:

  • 3 ALTs (based at junior high schools in each of Old Ikata, Seto, and Misaki)
  • 1 CIR (at the Town Office)
