Garbage (ごみ gomi) is handled differently in Japan than many parts of the world. Specifics about how garbage is handled depends largely on the town or city, so this article will limit itself to the general case.

Garbage is separated into several categories:

  • Burnable waste (燃えるごみ moeru gomi)
  • Non-burnable waste (燃えないごみ moenai gomi)
  • Recyclable waste (資源ごみ shigen gomi)
    • Cans (缶 kan)
    • Plastic (ペットボトル・プラスチック petto botoru, purasuchikku)
    • Glass (ガラス・瓶 garasu, bin)
  • Large waste (粗大ごみ sodai gomi)

Every municipality has special garbage bags (指定ごみ袋 shitei gomi-bukuro) for one (usually Burnable) or all of these types of garbage. You can find these special bags at convenience stores in the town or city.

You may have to write your name on each bag; if your garbage is found to be inappropriately sorted, it may be returned to you.

The various kinds of garbage are only collected on certain days according to a schedule distributed by the town or city, which is usually revised every April.

Removal of large garbage is usually by reservation only, and costs extra.

Event planning

When planning events, due consideration must be given to garbage management.

  1. You will almost certainly have to collect and bag your own trash.
  2. Your venue may or may not allow you to dump your trash on the premises. If not, you must take it home with you.
  3. Be sure you prepare separate garbage bags for different kinds of trash from the beginning so you don't have to sort by hand later.
