Rules and schedules for disposing of garbage in Ikata are as follows.

2008-9 Changes

As of April 2008, the garbage sorting and collection system for all of Ikata will be unified. In addition to new schedules, there are slightly new sorting categories and different designated garbage bags.

Sorting
  • "Non-burnable waste" is now called "landfill waste" everywhere.
  • Aluminum and steel cans are now collected together.
  • Cans and glass bottles that are dirty or have foreign objects in them are landfill waste.
  • Plastic containers that cannot be cleaned are burnable waste.
  • Tupperware and similar plastic products are landfill waste.
  • Styrofoam that cannot be cleaned is landfill waste.
  • Digital thermometers are landfill waste.
Bags
  • The new garbage bags are:
    • Designated burnable garbage bag
    • Designated landfill garbage bag
    • Everything else must be in a transparent plastic bag, as found in retail stores
  • You may use your old garbage bags until you run out.
Schedule

Sorting

Garbage in Ikata is sorted into the following categories:

Burnable waste (燃えるごみ moeru gomi)
Includes: food waste, paper, cotton, leather shoes, athletic shoes, paper diapers, saran wrap, aluminum foil, cooking oil
  • Remove excess water from food waste
  • Cut large items into 50cm pieces
  • Don't mix plastic in
  • Dispose of cooking oil by soaking it up in paper, or by solidifying it
  • Remove excrement from paper diapers
Landfill waste (埋立ごみ umetate gomi)
Formerly called non-burnable waste (燃えないごみ moenai gomi) in Old Ikata and Misaki
Includes: Glass, wire, ceramics, plastic, tree planters, thermoses, umbrellas, pots and pans, kettles, spray cans, batteries
  • Package sharp items like glass in a safe manner before disposing
  • Please disassemble or compact large, hollow items
  • Puncture spray cans before disposing to prevent explosions
  • If you have excessive amounts of waste, please haul it yourself
Recyclable waste (資源ごみ shigen gomi)
Cans (空缶 akikan)
Includes: Aluminum (アルミ arumi) and steel (スチール suchīru) cans (beer, juice, canned foods, candy containers, etc.)
  • Completely dry out the inside before disposing
  • Aluminum and steel cans are now collected on the same day
Styrofoam (発泡スチロール happō suchirōru)
Includes: Bentō lunch containers, plates, trays, fish boxes
  • Wash excessively dirty items before disposing
PET bottles (ペットボトル petto botoru)
Includes: Plastic containers bearing the "PET" logo (beverages, condiments, etc.)
  • Remove caps and clean out the insides before disposing
Glass bottles (空ビン akibin)
Includes: Glass bottles (beverages, food containers, medicine bottles, etc.) except isshō bottles (一升瓶 isshō bin), beer, and pesticide bottles
  • Remove caps and clean out the insides before disposing
  • Give returnable items such as beer and isshō bottles back to the place of purchase
Paper (古紙 koshi) and cloth items (古着 furugi)
Includes: Newspapers, magazines, cardboard, paper cartons (milk, juice, sake, etc.), fabric clothing
  • Among cloth items, the following are not accepted: nylon or leather products, cotton-stuffed pillows and cushions, garment factory waste, items wet with water or oil
  • Bundle newspapers, magazines, and cardboard separately. Newspapers should be folded in half. Do not put bundles into bags or boxes.
  • Put clothes in transparent bags so they do not get wet
  • For sake cartons, remove the inner aluminum foil and dispose separately. Wash the inside thoroughly and cut off the mouth of the container.
  • Collection days for this category of garbage may change depending on the weather. An announcement will be made beforehand on the town PA system.
Hazardous waste (有害ごみ yūgai gomi)
Includes: Mercury batteries, fluorescent light(bulbs), thermometers
  • Hazardous waste is collected three times per year. Do not dispose of these items as burnable or non-burnable waste.
  • Collection days for hazardous waste will be announced beforehand on the town PA system.
Large waste (粗大ごみ sodai gomi)
Includes: Non-burnable items that are oversized or in large volume
  • Bring these items to the Ikata Waste Treatment Center on Fridays between 2 and 4pm
  • Bundle cushions and blankets together
  • For electronics and home appliances, use retail-based recycling or buyback programs when available
  • Disassemble or break down large items if possible

Note: Caps are considered non-burnable waste.

Garbage bags

Note: Garbage bags will change in April 2008.

Waste must be disposed of in designated garbage bags (指定ごみ袋 shitei gomi-bukuro) as shown below. Each area uses a different bag system. Purchase these bags at convenience stores or local goods stores in your area.

Old Ikata

Old Ikata has only one designated garbage bag, for burnable garbage. You may use any kind of bag for non-burnable garbage. You are not required to write your name or address on your garbage bags.

Seto

Seto has the most complex garbage bag assortment in Ikata. Be sure to write your neighborhood (地区 chiku) and name (氏名 shimei) in the spaces provided.

Misaki

Misaki, like Old Ikata, does not require you to write your name or address on your garbage bags.

Prohibited items

The following items may not be disposed of through the town's garbage collection system.

  • Dangerous items such as gas canisters, fire extinguishers, batteries, etc.
  • Hazardous materials such as pesticides, poisons, solvents, etc.
  • Items containing hazardous materials such as microwave ovens, air conditioners, televisions, washing machines, refrigerators, freezers, vending machines, computers, etc.
  • Oversized appliances, motorcycles, cars, etc. (trade in your old one when replacing, or use a private waste disposal service)

Collection schedule

Take your garbage to your residence's designated drop-off area between 6:30 and 7:30 am on the day it is to be collected.

The garbage collection schedule is revised every April, and is different for the three regions of Ikata: Old Ikata, Seto, and Misaki.

Online calendars tracking garbage collection days are available via Google Calendars for the following neighborhoods. Subscribe to a calendar to keep up on trash days, using your own Google account or any software compatible with the iCalendar format.
