Here are some simple phrases in Japanese that might be useful when hosting a visitor from Japan.

Be sure to read up on spoken Japanese for tips on how to pronounce the examples below.

The basics

Meeting for the first time

  • Nice to meet you
初めまして
hajimemashite

Tip:
watashi means "I" or "me"
no indicates ownership, like 's in English as in ("Alice's" or "Bob's")
watashi no therefore means "my" or "mine"

  • My name is (---)
私の名前は(---)です
watashi no namae wa (---) desu
  • Let me introduce my family
私の家族を紹介します
watashi no kazoku o shōkai shimasu
  • My hobby is (---)
私の趣味は(---)です
watashi no shumi wa (---) desu
Examples:
  • fishing = 釣り = tsuri
  • baseball = 野球 = yakyū
  • listening to music = 音楽鑑賞 = ongaku kanshō
  • reading books = 読書 = dokusho

Daily greetings

  • Good morning
おはようございます
ohayō gozaimasu
  • Good afternoon / hello
こんにちは
konnichiwa
  • Good evening
こんばんは
konbanwa

oyasumi nasai

Tip:
ka on the end of a sentence indicates a question

  • How are you?
調子はどうですか?
chōshi wa dō desu ka?

Around the house

  • Let me show you around the house
家の中を案内します
ie no naka o annai shimasu
  • This is the (---)
ここが(---)です
koko ga (---) desu
Examples:
  • Living room = 居間 = ima
  • Kitchen = 台所 = daidokoro
  • Bedroom = 寝室 = shinshitsu
  • Bathroom = トイレ = toire (see Bathing for more details)
