Buses in Ikata can be difficult to use due to a number of factors including
- the length of the peninsula,
- the town's sparse population, and
- a lack of English information.
Buses that service Ikata are run by the Iyo Railway Co., also known as Iyotetsu (伊予鉄). The Iyotetsu website is available only in Japanese, but the following information may help.

How to ride the bus
- Find a bus stop and wait for a bus to come by
- Board the bus from the entrance at the rear (the front door is usually an exit only)†
- Take a numbered ticket(整理券 seiriken) from the machine at the door
- Your fare will be indicated by the lighted board at the front of the bus. Look at the price in the box with the number written on your ticket.
- If you don't have exact change, be sure to get change from the change machine (両替機 ryōgae-ki) at the front of the bus†
- Press the "Stop" (とまる tomaru) button before the bus reaches your stop
- Drop your ticket and fare into the box next to the driver when you get off
†Note: Express buses' entrances are often in the front, and change is given by an attendant instead of a machine.

Reading the timetables
When you click one of the links in the table above, you should be taken to a page that looks like the following:
八幡浜駅前 → 伊方町役場前:平日 行き先 出発時刻 到着時刻 運休 その他 伊方町役場前 17:30 18:18 三机 18:00 18:30 豊之浦 18:30 19:18 → →スキップバス(急行便)
In English:
From → To: [Weekday|Saturday|Holiday] Final destination Departure time Arrival time Doesn't run on certain days Other Destination hh:mm hh:mm Destination hh:mm hh:mm Destination hh:mm hh:mm → → Express bus
- Search the Departure time (出発時刻 shuppatsu jikoku) column for when you want to leave.
- Make sure the time next to it in the Arrival time(到着時刻 tōchaku jikoku) column is early enough that you won't be late.
- The total travel time is the difference between the arrival and departure times.
- You can safely ignore the Final destination (行き先|yukisaki) column, as the search will not show you any buses that stop before your desired destination.
Always double-check that From, To, and the day of the week (Weekday, Saturday, or Sunday/Holiday) are as you expected, or you may find yourself waiting for a bus that will never come.
