  • Ice skating at Prairie Island Arena

All had a good time, even though some figured out that ice is HARD.

  • Tree planting at Colvill Park

The Mayor, City Council President, and Sister City commissioners attended this.

  • Welcome picnic at Colvill Park

Over 70 people showed up to welcome the delegates and students of Ikata.

August 3rd

  • Walk in River City Days parade

There were 3 convertibles carrying the delegates while the students walked in the parade. The students wore tradtional Japanese festival clothes to help celebrate the occaision. After the parade, many families went to the Red Wing Art Festival. Two adventourous Ikata students even had Henna tatoo's put on their ankles.

August 4th

  • Pizza and Bowling

Because of the threat of rain, we decided to use this night for pizza and bowling. All students, families and others met at Godfathers Pizza for lot's of pizza and laughing. Following supper, everyone went across the parking lot to the bowling alley. We had about 30 people bowling.

August 5th

  • Progressive Dinner

Earlier in the day, the kids went to a horse farm, McDonalds for lunch, and then a dairy farm. A ride in the hay wagon was fun for all. Always a group favorite, we met at Glanders for appetizers, Walchs for main course, and Stegoras for dessert and swimming. We even watched as bats flew around eating mosquitos.

August 6th

  • Potluck at Reese's beach

At 6:00pm, we met at the Reese's for hot dogs, chicken, bratwurst and other delectables. Many of the students spent time splashing in the river or sitting by the bonfire.

August 7th

  • Family homestays

August 8th

  • Farewell picnic

August 9th

  • Bring group to airport for departure to Hawaii

We said goodbye to the students this morning. It was difficult to see them leave. We wish they could stay in Red Wing for a while longer. The check-in at the airport was delayed a bit as the ENTIRE group was "flagged" for an extra security check. It looked like they all made it through this check without issue. We wish all students good luck in Hawaii and on their trip back to Ikata. Thanks to all who made this year's exchange a great experience.

Optional activities

  • Day trip to the Mall of America
  • Tubing down the Cannon River
  • Shopping in Red Wing
  • Farm visit
  • Possible pottery tour
