Rocks and landslides
After long or heavy rains or earthquakes, if the following things occur it could mean that landslides or rock-slides are imminent. Please take proper precautions and seek shelter right away.
In general, 20 mm (0.8 in) of rain per hour, or 100 mm (4 in) total since rain started falling is enough to require caution.
Early indicators of landslides
Collapsing mountains and cliffs
- Springs or rivers suddenly increase output
- A spring or river that has never stopped before suddenly stops
- Springs or rivers that are usually clear now appear muddy
- Water runs down the side of a mountain
- You can hear the ground rumble
- Cracks or crevices appear in a mountainside
- Trees on a mountain are standing crooked
- Stones fall down the mountainside
Landslide
- Cracks appear in the ground
- Well or stream water appears muddy
- Water spouts from the side of a cliff or mountain
Rock slide
- A mountain begins to rumble
- River water levels go down despite continued rain
- Rivers appear muddy, or carry debris
