In case of emergency
Be prepared
Primary supplies
Get together all of the supplies you will need after seeking shelter. Make sure they can be easily carried by hand.
Overestimating your strength and bringing too many things can slow you down. A useful rule of thumb is 15 kg (33 lbs) for men, 10 kg (22 lbs) for women.
- Valuables
- Cash, titles and deeds, bankbooks, licenses, proof of insurance, etc.
- Portable radio and flashlight
- Make sure you have extra batteries
- Clothing
- Underwear, shirts & pants, towels, diapers, etc.
- First Aid Kit
- Bandages, ointment, gauze, disinfectant, prescription and other medications, etc.
- Emergency Rations
- Items like canned foods and crackers that need not be cooked, mineral water, canteens, etc.
Secondary supplies
Prepare enough supplies to keep yourself safe and fed during the disaster recovery period (plan for at least 3 days).
- Food
- Rice (Canned rice, retort-pouch rice, etc. can be convenient), other canned or retort-sealed foods, candies, pickled vegetables, condiments.
- Also utensils and tools like disposable chopsticks, spoons, cups, plates, knives, etc.
- Water
- Secure about 3 liters per person per day. Store water in plastic jugs.
- Boil water before drinking it.
- Keep mineral water for children and those with compromised immune systems.
- Keep a supply of additional water in a tank for laundry, bathing, flushing toilets, and putting out fires.
- Fuel
- Be sure to stock up on propane for tabletop grills and the like.
- Be careful to maintain good ventilation and be careful of fires when using charcoal grills.
- Food for infants and the elderly
- Milk formula, baby food, liquid or soft foods, etc.
- Be sure to consider the needs of young children and the elderly.
